Best allergy-friendly cupcakes: Akki’s Cupcakery

Whether you’re gluten-free, keto, or vegan, there’s something for you at Akki’s specialty cupcake shop. This store makes some of the tastiest custom cupcakes you’ll find in the Alamo City. I’m a sucker for their Black Forest Cupcakes that are topped with maraschino cherries, but the Tiramisu Cupcakes, Lemon Cupcakes, and Pistalicious Cupcakes are to die for. Oh, and Akki’s also makes dog-friendly Pupcakes if you like to spoil your four-legged family members, too.

Keep in mind that every cupcake is made to order here. If you’ve got a hankering for cupcakes, you need to submit your order at least 24 hours in advance, so remember to give Akki’s a little notice!

Best carrot cupcake: Bird Bakery

Located off Broadway, Bird Bakery has a small-town cafe ambiance that I love. If you’re in the mood for a fresh gourmet cupcake with a cup of awesome coffee, you’ve got to visit Bird Bakery. I’m not always big on strawberry sweets, but their Fresh Strawberry Cupcake calls to me every time. If it’s your first time at Bird Bakery, though, you’ve got to try their award-winning Carrot Cupcake: topped with luscious cream cheese icing and a perfectly spiced sponge, it’s a must for carrot cake lovers.

P.S. Bird Bakery offers gluten-free versions of any of their cupcakes, so if you don’t want any wheat products, they’re happy to accommodate. Just be sure to give them 1-2 days’ notice to bake your order from scratch.

Zaniest seasonal cupcakes: Oh Yeah Cakes

I’m a huge chocolate fiend and Oh Yeah Cakes’ decadent Brownie Molten Cupcake always hits the spot. But the coolest thing about Oh Yeah Cakes is their adventurous menu. Depending on the time of year, you can order out-there cupcake flavors like Margarita, Bunuelo, and even Funnel Cake (complete with a mini funnel cake on top of the cupcake). I can’t make this stuff up, folks.

If you want to place a custom cupcake order, Oh Yeah Cakes asks for 4-6 weeks’ notice. But I promise the wait is worth it!

Best chain cupcakes: Gigi’s Cupcakes

I had a friend in college who worked part-time at Gigi’s Cupcakes. At the end of her shift, she always brought us a mountain of Gigi’s leftover cupcakes—and I indulged every chance I could. Gigi’s is a national chain, but their cool flavors are nothing to shake a stick at. Whether it’s a Banana Split Cupcake, Sundae Fundae Cupcake, or Strawberry Shortcake Cupcake, you’re sure to satisfy your sweet tooth with a trip to Gigi’s Cupcakes.

Best dairy-free cupcakes: Miss Chickpea’s

I recently stopped by Miss Chickpea’s for the first time, and I nearly inhaled their Oreo Cupcake in one bite. That’s how good it is. Although they sell savory Mexican-inspired dishes here, the star of Miss Chickpea’s menu is their cupcakes. The Banana Split Cupcake truly tastes like a banana split (and it doesn’t hurt that it’s Instagrammably pretty) and the Chocolate Dipped Strawberry Cupcake is a velvety wonder.

Want a custom order of cupcakes for an event? Message Miss Chickpea’s at least a week in advance to create your dairy-free treats.

Best gourmet cupcakes: Sugar Mama’s Tasty Treats

Sugar Mama’s uses decades-old family recipes for their cupcakes and it shows. The Oreo Funfetti Cupcake is a fun mash-up of my two favorite childhood flavors, but the Italian Cream Cupcake is on another level. The cakes are always moist, the frosting is always fluffy, and the folks behind the counter are always friendly. They even do custom gender reveal parties if you’d like to celebrate a new arrival in sugary style.

Oh, and you might catch a glimpse of Sugar Mama’s Tasty Treats foodtruck serving at events or weddings. If you’re really in the mood to celebrate, you can ask Sugar Mama’s about catering cupcakes on the road. Neat, huh?

Best custom cupcakes: The Exclusive Cake Shop

You’re free to walk in and choose the available cupcakes in the display case, but The Exclusive Cake Shop shines with custom orders. The Exclusive Cake Shop is happy to design custom gourmet cupcakes for your next event. While other custom cupcakes have cool designs and “meh” flavors, The Exclusive Cake Shop marries beauty and taste for ultimate cupcake deliciousness. They can fulfill any zany ideas, whether you want Alice In Wonderland-themed cupcakes or always-on-trend unicorn cupcakes.

Tastiest filled cupcakes: Meemo’s Bakery & Cafe

I love a traditional cupcake with frosting, but if you want to munch on more complex cupcakes, check out Meemo’s. This bakery also serves scratch-made breakfast, cakes, muffins, and cookies, but their filled cupcakes are a sight to behold. Customize your cupcakes with different cake, frosting, and filling options for a truly personalized flavor that you can’t get anywhere else. (I’m a red velvet cake, cream cheese icing, strawberry filling kind of girl, but the flavor combos here are endless.)

P.S. Meemo’s only uses real fruit, butter, and cream, so if you’re trying to avoid artificial ingredients, this is the place to go.

Biggest cupcakes: Sweet Secrets Cake Shop

Have you ever wanted to buy a literal bucket of icing? Good news! Sweet Secrets accommodates ALL the sweet teeth with its custom-designed desserts and famous buttercream icing. Enjoy regular-sized cupcakes in flavors like Italian Creme, Black Velvet, and Toasted Coconut for just $1.50 – $2.50 each. If you’re really Jonesing for gourmet cupcakes, ask for a Texas Sized version at $3 – $4 a pop.

Oh, and they’re cool with walk-ins, so if you want to stop by and say hi, they’ll be more than happy to serve you.

Best mini cupcakes: Smallcakes

Hey, I like to eat huge cupcakes, but I know some folks prefer a smaller bite of something sweet. If you want a gourmet experience with smaller cakes that don’t compromise on flavor, check out Smallcakes. I love their Southern Belle Cupcake, which comes with a vanilla cake, caramel icing, sea salt, and pretzels.

If you’re in the mood for more than cupcakes, the ice cream here is phenomenal. In fact, Smallcakes makes fresh milkshakes with cupcakes in them, so it’s a great spot to grab a cool dessert in the San Antonio heat.
